6 Tips for Hair Transplantation Aftercare
Receiving a hair transplant can be a life-changing moment. A full head of hair can give you a huge confidence boost and greatly alter how those around you perceive you. However, after the procedure, it’s important that you do the proper aftercare so your new head of hair can keep turning others’. To help you along the way, we’ve compiled a list of six hair transplant aftercare tips to ensure that you make the most of your surgery.
1. Take a breather.
After your transplant surgery, you’ll need to rest for a few days. Giving your body some downtime is imperative to encourage healthy healing and hair growth. Avoid any activities that require exerting physical energy. Be patient with yourself and give yourself time to heal.
2. Don’t pick.
Do not aggravate the wound by picking or scratching. This may go without saying but picking at the wound disrupts the healing process.
3. Try to stay in optimal conditions.
The first few days after your procedure, it may be best to stay indoors. Exposure to extreme temperatures – both hot and cold – can affect how your scalp heals. Try to keep pressure off the area where you received the transplant. Right after your surgery, you may need to sleep upright for a few days.
4. Don’t take aspirin.
While you may experience some discomfort post-surgery, it’s important that you don’t take aspirin or any medication with blood thinners because they could cause excessive bleeding. If you’re required to take a blood thinner, you need to discuss this with your doctor before your surgery so they can suggest the best course of action for you.
5. Avoid alcohol.
Like aspirin, alcohol is a blood thinner. It is best to avoid it for a day after your surgery, or longer if recommended by your surgeon.
6. Shower and shampoo carefully.
After your surgery, you will need to wait a day or two before shampooing your hair. You will need to use a pH-balanced shampoo. Be gentle when you wash the scabs and be careful not to pick at them or scrub them. It’s recommended that you wash the area of the procedure by lathering the palms of your hands and lightly patting the lather onto your scalp. Your surgeon may recommend that you wait longer before shampooing and it is best to follow their instructions.
