Platelet-Rich Plasma: Does the Cure for Hair Loss Lie Within Our Blood?
Hair restoration with platelet-rich plasma is one of the most modern, advanced treatments available today. What is platelet-rich plasma, and can this cutting-edge treatment really reverse hair loss? Here are the basic facts about this popular treatment.
What is platelet-rich plasma?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is derived from our own blood. The body uses PRP to heal injuries and regenerate cells. In the medical field, this powerful substance has been used for years to help heal wounds, and more recently regenerate the skin.
To obtain PRP, it must be isolated from the rest of the blood and put into a concentrated form. Blood is drawn from the arm, then spun in a centrifuge to separate out the platelet-rich plasma.
How does PRP regrow hair?
Thinning hair is caused by hair follicles weakening and becoming inactive, either growing thinner, weaker hair, or stopping the growth of hair altogether.
PRP has been found to contain growth factors that regenerate cells. When PRP is applied to the scalp, it stimulates hair follicle function. The cells become healthier and are triggered to function again, producing thicker and healthier hairs.
How is PRP applied to regenerate hair growth?
Once a small amount of blood is drawn and the PRP is isolated, tiny injections of PRP are made into the targeted area of the scalp. The procedure takes less than an hour.
After 3-4 weeks, the PRP has had enough time to regenerate the hair follicles, you will begin to see an improvement in the thickness and quality of your hair. More sessions are performed to ensure that all of the hair follicles are treated with PRP during their growth phase, which happens in cycles.
Ideal results are usually achieved after three PRP sessions, each spaced a month apart. A month after your last session, there should be a dramatic improvement in the overall thickness of the hair that was treated with PRP injections.
Is PRP hair therapy for anyone?
PRP is a safe, extremely low-risk hair regeneration treatment that requires no incisions or downtime. However, it’s not for everyone. PRP hair restoration is best for people who are in the early stages of hair loss (not fully bald). If your hair is naturally thin or has begun thinning, PRP is likely an ideal treatment for you.
